  Gnu Backgammon for MacOS X
COST:  Free.
DESCRIPTION:  One of the strongest programs on this list. It has nice graphics, comes with a tutor to point out your errors. Gnu BG can analyze games and matches you play online or play against the computer.
Read Albert Silver's tutorial All About GNU for more information. There is a lot there for serious players willing to take the time to learn.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:  MacOS X 10.2 "Jaguar" or newer with 256 MB RAM; an X11R6 server, either Apple's "X11" or the Darwin community's "XDarwin" will do.

Also comes in a Tutor version ($110) which evaluates positions, suggests moves, and tells you if you made a mistake, and an Analyzer version ($250) which rolls out positions to give more accurate evaluations.
